It seems that tonight’s show was brought to you by the letter “H”. Why? Well, because we played Juliana Hatfield, Robyn Hitchcock, and then ended our double overtime(!) with a 3 song run of honeychain (featuring Hillary Burton), The Handcuffs, and then Jimi Hendrix. It wasn’t an intentional theme, but just a little something I noticed at the end of the show. Sometimes you write the theme, other times, the theme writes you. “H” also stands for hot, as it was 97 degrees in Sacramento at showtime, but did cool down to a near perfect 77 degrees by the time we wrapped up.
I was proud to have received Danny Wilkerson’s excellent new album, “Wilkerson”, late last week, and I premiered another wonderful song, “Carry The One”. The album releases right now, so I’ll make sure you get to hear more songs from it as summer progresses.
I also premiered a nearly 20 year old song by Susan Greenbaum, a wonderful singer-songwriter from Richmond, VA. I’m perhaps a “little” late to the party, but a friend of mine here in Sacramento told me about her, and made sure I heard her music. It won’t be decades before the next time I play her music; probably more like days!
What else was interesting on this show? Well, some funky New Orleans rock ‘n’ roll from King James & The Special Men, Bart Mendoza covering a mid-1980’s Elvis Costello song in late-1970s Elvis Costello style (really, you’ll just have to hear it to see if I’m right about this), Right Said Fred singing their signature “I’m Too Sexy”–but in Spanish with a slight French accent, and we jumped back a decade to hear Kaz Murphy paint some amazing word pictures from Los Angeles.
And so much more. The entire show really had a good vibe, and I had great fun chatting with friends in the Woody Radio chat room, on Twitter, and on Facebook. I think you need to listen to this show and hear what all the fuss is about.
I think you also need to listen to the other great DJs on Woody Radio too. They care about the music, and making sure the indies get heard right alongside the more well known artists. We are all interested in giving you something good to listen to.
