Summer’s almost over. Well, at least according to the calendar. Here in Sacramento, I think we should have something like a September version of Groundhog Day–if the Groundhog sees his shadow, then we’re in for six more weeks of summer. That’s how it usually works around here–we have warm weather well past the equinox, right up to Halloween week. But this week’s show was the last official DJ Mike summer show. So how did we celebrate? Well, for one, we ironically played a song off of Michael Simmons’ fabulous album “First Days Of Summer”. But hey–if it’s going to continue to be warm, no better album to blast out of rolled-down car windows than that one.
I also discovered something interesting in my music collection. I have at least four songs with the name “Caroline” in the title–and three of them are recent 2018 releases! So–I played a set containing all my Caroline songs. And better still–none of them are by Neil Diamond–they’re all from indie artists!
Of course, what show would be complete without weird, anomalous segues? As an example, we went from Agony Aunts (with the naughtiest vocals I’ve ever heard KC Bowman and Karla Kane singing) to Lloyd Cole to Jimi Hendrix to The Taters. That was probably my favorite set of segues of the night.
And we kind of went out with a bang as well. So much music left after three full hours, that I had to invoke…DOUBLE OVERTIME! If you look down the playlist, Los Lobos “Tears Of God”–one of the most touching songs from their illustrious catalog–was how we rounded out the third hour. And every song after that fell into place and set a mood. Felsen’s mission statement song “Rock And Roll’s Not Dead” was the perfect start to that after-hours set. I wanted to make sure to send you off into the night properly, and set the stage for Boris’ “Secret Weapon”.
Speaking of that–once you’re done listening to my show, make sure you check out all the other Woody Radio shows as well. There’s lots of thoughtfully-curated music on each of these shows, and you’ll definitely hear something new.
Enjoy the show!
