This week’s show was fun. Wait–I think I said that about last week’s show too. I had listeners marveling at how, um, “diverse” the music was tonight. We really did have some sets of music, right out of the gate, that kept us all on our toes. Just that first full set–between new addition to our rotation Rachel Taylor Brown, The Bobbleheads, Sue Leonard, and Elvis Costello–some very different sounds there, but they all managed to flow together, and keep the listeners (and your host) guessing. And good thing too–it gets late for some of our Woody Radio listeners, and so these jarring segues should keep everybody awake.
It was kind of a festive show, being the day before Halloween. We played a Halloween song by The Taters. Did you know that about three years ago, they did an entire album of Halloween originals? And then after that, we played one of the only rock ‘n’ roll songs I know of, if not the only song, to feature bagpipes. And strangely enough, in 20 years of doing radio, that was the very first time I’d ever played AC/DC on any of my shows. Why? Well, I love a lot of AC/DC’s catalog, but it gets played so much on commercial radio, that I usually choose to give my airtime to artists who don’t get as much exposure. But this particular song, “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘N’ Roll)”, is just stellar. Something about the guitar vs bagpipe corps interplay just gets me. (And that’s not a sentence I ever thought I’d write!) We also made sure to wish a belated happy birthday to Maria Sokratis of The Undecided By Default. We covered the upcoming US elections with a topical DC Cardwell song. And we debuted another Molly Grue song, featuring a stellar vocal performance by Krista Acheson. All in all, there were really a lot of musical treats for you this week. I hope you get to listen to at least a little bit of the show.
While you’re at it, make some time to listen to any one or more of the other Woody Radio shows. There’s some amazing music to be found, for sure. It’s a labor of love for all of us. Enjoy the show!
