WOODY RADIO DJ MIKE SHOW #58, 5/14/2019

Enjoy this random shot of a fish taco I had for lunch, mere hours before doing the radio show.
This week’s show was all-out, guns blazing, rock ‘n’ roll glory. Many different styles of music were represented. I didn’t even wait till the wee hours to start playing the weird stuff–I just threw some of that in during the first hour, and kept going.

Highlights? Well, for instance, we played a couple of Beatles covers–one by Anton Barbeau, and one by The Cherry Bluestorms. In both cases–the songs were completely reinvented, and sound great in 2019. Brought Smoking Popes aboard for the first time (yes, I’m slow, but I get there), and some new New Duncan Imperials made the scene (yes, I get to say “new New” in that sentence!). Some noteworthy geography: soul music from Iowa (Diplomats of Solid Sound), Americana from Washington, D.C. (Lisa Said), power pop from Reno (Nick Eng), and more Americana from Brooklyn, NYC (Girls On Grass). Matt Langlois offered up some quick fashion advice–in under 60 seconds! Translator, Leslie Pereira & The Lazy Heroes, and Michael Simmons all ruminated on summer–even though we’re a long way off from it here in rainy Sacramento. And of course, late in the show, we played a Midwest gem from long ago–Fire Town, sounding a lot like an ominous version of The Jayhawks. A little background on Fire Town–they ended up adding Shirley Manson and became Garbage in the 1990s–but not before drummer Butch Vig produced some other people’s music (ever hear of Nirvana’s Nevermind?).

Oh–and I ate a couple of great fish tacos at Oscar’s Very Mexican Food in West Sacramento for lunch the day of the show, and was so moved to share a photo of this glorious California culinary delight. That, in part, is what powered tonight’s show.

So this show was a great jaunt through rock ‘n’ roll. It really was the kind of show I would have liked to listen to–had I not been busy at the time it aired! Hopefully, you’ll feel the same way. Enjoy, and then go out and enjoy all the other shows at Woody Radio too.
