WOODY RADIO DJ MIKE SHOW #63, 6/18/2019

DJ Mike is taken aback at the eclectic mix of music in this episode.
Promises. They’re meant to be kept. And I dont like to make a promise unless I can keep it. And that’s just what I did this past Tuesday night. Within an hour before showtime, I made the following promise on Facebook and Twitter:

“It’s Tuesday night, and that means it’s time for the DJ Mike show with no name on Woody Radio! 3+ hours of amazing music, mixed together randomly and with no common sense!”

Well guess what–I delivered. Especially with that random mix of music, put together with no common sense. Some of these segues are just plain not supposed to happen.

Exhibit A. Think about Rachel Taylor Brown’s song “Little Gyre”. If you listen, it’s energetic, frenetic, and jarring. The piano playing is loud and angry, and the vocals get to the point of overmodulation. It’s pretty exciting to listen to. But what the heck–how did Buck Owens get placed right after that? Um, well…

Exhibit B. A three song set, from top to bottom: Banjo Bones, Sacramento’s “Dark Side of Americana”, then Mimi Betinis, the King of Power Pop (at least one of them), and immediately after that, AC/DC–and not just any AC/DC song, but “It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘N’ Roll)”. Yes–the amazing bagpipe song. That one. The only sensible thing I did there was to make that one the last song of the set–because nothing, simply nothing, should ever follow that song. It’s a set-ender.

Exhibit C. This one happened in the first set of overtime, which we lovingly refer to as Overtime I. A blazing track from local cowpunk outfit JonEmery & The Unconventionals, followed by The Who’s “905”, a typically odd John Entwistle composition, about test tube babies. Who allowed this?

So here’s your homework assignment: listen to the show, and see if you can hear any other illegal and illogical segues. I’m sure you’ll find them. And in the process, be entertained, and enjoy the music!
