WOODY RADIO DJ MIKE SHOW #64, 6/25/2019

64 shows! DJ Mike doesn’t even look that old.
“Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four?”

Yes, this is my 64th show on Woody Radio. And I’m hoping you still need me–or at least the music that I play. But even if you don’t, I’ll come back next week for another try.

Speaking of Woody Radio–this was the first night of our new Tuesday radio block–our very own DJ Gidget rejoins our Tuesday lineup. So in order, we have DJ Gidget coming on at 3:00 p.m. Pacific, then DJ Mac at 5:00 p.m., and me at 8:00 p.m. That adds up to over 8 hours of live DJs in a row, who care very deeply about what you listen to.

When I got my turn, I was able to get over 55 songs into the show. And came out of the gate fighting. DJ Mac ended his show with the epic Prince song Purple Rain. So I jumped right in with Taj Mahal. And then Liz Phair. Is this even allowed? Sure it is–this is Woody Radio.

Later on, I debuted a track from the late, great Sacramento band Sex 66: “Skinny Girl”. About 75% rock and roll and 25% Americana–more rocking than not. Listen for the dive-bombing guitar runs–there hasn’t been a band out of Sacramento like these guys since they disbanded in 2000.

And–a couple of birthday greetings: Lindy LaFontaine and Michael Simmons both celebrated birthdays this week, so we celebrated their music.

Finally–a rare track–Rick Hromadka of Maple Mars, recorded live in the Sacramento Twirl Radio studios last summer, doing his signature song “Welcome to Maple Mars”. As relaxed as that session was, the performance was still magnificent, and I was lucky to have captured it.

So grab my hand, and let’s dive into all this music.
