WOODY RADIO DJ MIKE SHOW #84, 12/17/2019

Let’s get festive here!
We’re getting even closer to the holidays. One week out from Christmas, and two weeks out from New Year’s. And these musicians, man, they’re not even slowing down. Still MORE new music coming in this week, so I’m getting it out to you.

Anton Barbeau’s next album is called Kenny Vs. Thrust. It’s called that, because his Sacramento band is called Kenny (I’ve seen them play live many times, and they are a tight, killer unit), and his UK band is called Thrust. From what I understand, this album is a half and half mix of songs featuring each of those bands. The release date is 2020–so this is destined to be the first great album of the 2020’s decade! And what’s more, it’ll be on the great Big Stir Records label, so that’s a good thing too. We’ll play a track off of it. And that alone would be a good reason to listen to this show.

But wait…there’s more! Emily Zuzik dropped me a Christmas track. It’s a downbeat, moody cover of Christmas Time Is Here–you know, the song featured on the legendary Peanuts TV specials. It’s so different from the original, that you simply have to take notice. And as I always say, Emily is strong in every genre of pop music that she takes on. There is simply nothing that Emily can’t do, musically speaking.

And still more…Lisa Mychols sent me a wonderful Christmas song, Ringing Bells on Christmas Day. It was written by Brian Fagnano, and she and Steve Refling put it together. It’s got a wonderfully upbeat, Motown-influenced sound. If you want to be cheered up, Lisa’s song will do the trick.

Normally, I’m not all that big on Christmas music, but these two excellent tracks are different and unusual, and sound good to my ears.

And another debut for my Woody Radio show–Sacramento’s own Blame The Bishop, Warren Bishop’s local rockin’ outfit, just released a couple of cool new tracks, and we’ll hear one of them.

At the same time, we dig a little deeper into the new albums by The Amplifier Heads (Sal Baglio/Ducky Carlisle), Project: Ghost Outfit (Bill Lloyd/Tom Petersson), and Lannie Flowers. Yep, December 2019’s been good to us. This decade doesn’t want to go quietly into the night without a fight.

Program note–this was my last Tuesday night show of the year, until January. HOWEVER–I will be doing Saturday shows on December 28th and January 4th, and am plotting to sneak in one or two other Woody Radio shows as well. So just because it’s the holidays and vacation time, doesn’t mean I’m taking it easy on you. We will rock hard together!

Enjoy the show.
