Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #92, 2/11/2020

DJ Mike, having a moment.

Ok, being a little lazy does have its benefits. The last show I posted was the show where I unveiled my top 40 songs from 2019. I left it up here for a couple of weeks, and that way, people had a chance to dig in, and find some great songs they might have missed. But–it came at the cost of me now having to catch up. The following week, we had a pretty great set of music as well, and I’m presenting it to you here.

There were definitely some highlights. That week, a Facebook friend of mine, Robin Yukiko, posted a lovely song of hers. I owe her about a thousand apologies. I’ve known her online for the better part of a decade, yet hadn’t heard much of her music. Turns out she’s fairly modest about promoting herself. Her song “Ocean Floor” blew me away–the tune is lovely, and her voice is special. So if you guys like it, feel free to shout from the rooftops about Robin’s great musical talents, and about this song in particular.

But wait, there’s more! As you may know, I’ve really been getting into Harvey Danger, about 20 years too late. Yep, we all know that “I’m not sick, but I’m not well” was a weird little alternative rallying cry from their “Flagpole Sitta” hit. But the entire album it came from, “Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone?”, turns out to be quite a bit deeper than you might think. The song “Private Helicopter” just hits me right–old romances and old friendships reexamined.

Renée LoBue needed to put together a side project in between albums from her “forever band”, the great Elk City. Whenever an artist says they “need” to create something, they’ve got my ear. Her project is called Flowers Of America. It’s quirky and challenging, yet melodic, and we’re going to hear their first single, “Creepy Creepin’ The Dark Hallway. It’s a very unlikely earworm. You wouldn’t think it would be an earworm, but every time I listen, it stays around for a while. Renée is good at that.

And what else? How about Rick Hromadka performing a song live in the Twirl Radio studios? And how about Malo’s legendary and transcendent “Suavecito”? “Dude, what are you thinking?” I’m thinking that I’m playing music that I want to hear, and that all goes well together–and that I want you to hear too! Dig in, and enjoy!
