Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #105, 4/18/2020: Jody Porter and Krista Acheson interviews!

Jody Porter on Woody Radio’s DJ Mike’s show.
This week’s Saturday show was a whole lot of fun, centered around a doubleheader of interviews. Two great artists, both of whom have been on my Twirl Radio show before, returned to chat about what they’ve been up to.

In the first hour, we chatted with Jody Porter. You might know him from his work as lead guitarist in Fountains of Wayne. You might also know him for his great solo record, Pacifier, which was a big part of 2017 and beyond, on my radio shows. It turns out that his forthcoming album, Waterways, is his favorite work so far. It’s not out there for the world to hear yet, but we played his track Moonbeam Reach, which debuted a few days earlier on Rolling Stone’s website. I’ve heard another track from the album as well (sorry, not allowed to play it yet), and both of these songs are great, and if they’re any indicator of the rest of the album, then Waterways will be my favorite–and a must-hear. We had a good back and forth about the music, life during quarantine, and the state of the music industry in general. Check out the new track on Rolling Stone’s website: (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/jody-porter-fountains-of-wayne-new-song-983111/).

Krista Acheson
In the third hour of the show, Krista Acheson paid us a return visit. She’s a musician and visual artist from Edmonton, Canada, and has been on my radar for a couple of years. Most well-known for her Krista D project, she’s since made me aware of three additional music projects of hers: Molly Grue, Sally’s Six-Gun Sorrow, and Hooha and the Peter Guns. And I jokingly asked her if she’s holding out on me–are there any other music projects she works on? Her answer blew my mind: “Yes”!

So we know Krista keeps busy. In an unprecedented move for my show, I played a song from each of her musical projects. I found out the answer to the nagging question: “What’s the difference between each of her bands?” We also talked about what went into the music, and how she’s really gotten deeper and deeper into the DIY ethic. She’s an exceptional vocalist, and everything I’ve heard of hers has been consistently great. We also talked about her visual art as well. For a comprehensive look at both her art and music, check out http://www.trimorfik.com/

We still made sure to play plenty of music, new, old, well-known, and obscure. Give a listen–hopefully, you’ll hear a new favorite in this show.
