Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #109, 5/2/2020: Louis Michot interview!

Louis Michot
On today’s show, aside from playing tons of great music, our very special guest was Louis Michot, founder of Grammy winning Louisiana band Lost Bayou Ramblers. You might think of them as a Cajun band, but they tend to go way deeper than that–and left and right of that, as well. Louis also founded Nouveau Electric Records a couple of years back, right around the first time I’d interviewed him on radio. Nouveau Electric’s mission: they “seek to bridge the gap between tradition and evolution”. And indeed they do.

This time, we talked about Louis’ two current side projects that have generated much interest: Le String Noise (as part of his L.E.S. Douze series of live recordings), and Soul Creole. We started off by playing Le String Noise’s cover of Violent Femmes’ “Gone Daddy Gone”–which was a total treat and mind-trip, all at once! Turns out that Louis is friends with Gordon Gano, and the Ramblers have worked with him. And in reality–their ethos is similar–pushing the boundaries of their various genres. And over the past five years, the Ramblers have also been the backing band for The Pogues–specifically, Spider Stacy and Cait O’Riordan. Again, not as far-fetched as it might seem.

Louis’ other experimental project over the past few years is Soul Creole, with his wife Ashlee Michot, Corey Ledet, and Korey Richey. The song we heard, Trois Rangs–was an unusual mix of the Zydeco and Dub genres. Again–pushing boundaries.

Louis and I had a fun chat about where this all fits in the world of music–and while he was describing it, I was visualizing a sloppy musical Venn diagram in my head. And as with so many other touring musicians, right now, he’s at home regrouping. He’s using the time to plan Nouveau Electric’s next releases. Check out the Lost Bayou Ramblers page and the Nouveau Electric Records page.

And–enjoy this show. Please have your friends listen too. Some of their next favorite bands are likely on this episode!
