Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #111, 5/9/2020: Interview with KatieJane Garside of liar, flower!

KatieJane Garside

On today’s show, I got to meet the legendary KatieJane Garside. You might know her from her 1990s glitter-punk band Daisy Chainsaw, or from industrial band Test Department, or her duo Ruby Throat, with partner Chris Whittingham. Ruby Throat has morphed into their latest project: liar, flower, and their debut album, “Geiger Counter”, was released on May 1st.

I was out jogging the other morning (not to worry–you could probably race right past me if you were walking–I’m not the world’s fastest runner), and listening to Geiger Counter. The leadoff track, “I Am Sundress”, was a sweet, soft affair, perfect for the early morning quiet of my residential neighborhood. Immediately after that, “My Brain Is Lit Like An Airport” came on, and slammed me into overdrive with its high intensity ferocity. And that’s how it goes–the album is at times beautiful and melodic, and at times aggressive and ferocious. The dynamics and emotional range are stunning. I knew this record would be quite a ride.

KatieJane and her family had been living on a sailboat, traveling the world for a few years, and the music that she and Chris made at the time reflected that. It wasn’t practical to bring loud amplifiers about a boat. But they returned to the southeast part of the UK, where they’ve been land-based for a while, so they had the ability to turn the volume back up. And the name for the band, and the songs themselves, found KatieJane, quite literally, as that’s how she works. For example, the track I was listening to (My Brain Is Lit Like An Airport) was the result of a somewhat impromptu 1-1/2 hour recording session. KatieJane and Chris sort of mined the song from the recording, cleaned it up, and turned it into a finished piece. No wonder it sounds so spontaneous.

KatieJane is a true artist, in every sense of the word, and she has a great relationship with, and respect for, her fans. Learn more about her, and purchase Geiger Counter at http://www.katiejanegarside.com/. Some packages include some of her artwork, prints, comic books, and more.

This show featured a whole lot of great music, new and old, including a handful of tracks I hadn’t played in years. Give a listen–you’re sure to find something you love.
