On this Saturday’s show, I got to meet New Orleans-based drummer and bandleader Chris Lacinak. He fronts the band Junko Beat, which released its second album about a week ago, “Satirifunk”.
Chris is a well-traveled and seasoned drummer. A New Orleans native, he’s played and toured with some of the most well-known jazz and roots musicians, including Allen Toussaint, Henry Butler, Tab Benoit, and others. He spent a decade in New York City, working with, of all people, British rock musicians. One point that came out in our chat is that while musicians in other places, such as New York, tend to be specialists–they stay within one genre, New Orleans musicians tend to be more fluid–they genre hop. Anything is fair game.
I love that Junko Beat is described as a “funky dance jamkronic band”. I didn’t even know the word “jamkronic”, but I already knew that I’d like the music. The word itself just sounds fun! (And yes, Chris helped define it during the interview.) The Satirifunk album is pretty great too. Some of it does make you want to get up and move, while other tracks are really good for “zoning out”–walking, running, or even getting some work done. It’s an interesting listen, and well worth your time. www.junkobeat.com
In keeping with Chris’ New Orleans eclectism, he started his own record label, Drumparade Music. Drumparade’s releases are, well, eclectic and musically diverse. www.drumparaderecords.com
On this week’s show, we also played a mix of brand new songs, never before played on my show, and a mix of old stuff I dug out from my Recharged Radio days, over a decade ago. I hope you’ll enjoy the mix.
