Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #151 9/26/2020: Interviews with Ryan Smith of Ryan and Pony, and Nick Frater

35

On this show, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting a couple of musicians whose music I’d only recently become acquainted with. I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan Smith of Ryan and Pony, and Nick Frater. Both have great new albums out.

First up was Ryan Smith. You might know him for his work as a founding member of Minneapolis-based The Melismatics, or his work as lead guitarist with Soul Asylum. He and bassist Pony decided to start their own group, as The Melismatics have been on a bit of a hiatus. Their new album, “Moshi Moshi” (on the venerable Pravda Records), is terrific. Kind of alternative rock, and a bit danceable, this could be the record that makes rock and roll hip again. Great originals, and a stunning Prince cover. We had a good long chat and talked about such topics as the legendary Twin Cities music scene and how quarantining with Soul Asylum prepared them for releasing an album during a pandemic. Later on, Nick Frater was my guest. One of those artists who I’ve been aware of for quite some time, but hadn’t heard his music–until now. We run in similar circles, and his prior album received amazing accolades. So this year, 2020, I jumped aboard the Nick Frater bandwagon with his new album “Fast & Loose”, his first effort on Big Stir Records. It’s a really good album–great vocals and harmonies, lyrics, and playing. We talked a little bit about how Nick always seems to do things the old school, hard way–including the making of the album cover. Nick is also a sought-after producer. He’s known for gently coaxing the best out of artists. Learn more at www.nickfrater.com.

Enjoy the show!
