Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #153 10/3/2020: Blake Jones interview!

On this show, I had the chance to chat with my old friend, Blake Jones, who you may know from Blake Jones & The Trike Shop (see how that works?). Blake’s been a favorite on my radio shows for the past decade, and for good reason. He’s fun and affable, and has participated in lots of musical radio shenanigans on my old show, Twirl Radio, and my new show on Woody Radio. Blake is pretty modest, but I like to think of him as the ambassador to the Fresno arts and music scene. Really, he’s one of a small contingent of artists and musicians who’ve created a thriving scene in the Central California city. As he’s put it, “we have to make our own fun”.

It’s not often that a new Trike Shop album comes out. It’s usually a few years between releases, and the occasional tours up and down California, or over to the UK, punctuate those non-album years. Last year at this time, I did my first Woody Radio remote broadcast. It was live from Blake’s Whispermaphone Studios–a place where I’ve felt so comfortable, that I knew my first Woody remote would have to be done there. Blake arranged for a bunch of my favorite Fresno musicians to be part of the show that day–and what a blast we had. (That show can be found here: https://woodyradioblog.com/2019/11/09/woody-radio-dj-mike-show-77-10-5-2019/.)

And then came 2020. The world was disrupted, and like everybody else, Blake Jones & The Trike Shop paused and sheltered in place. Right where they were. Staying healthy and safe, and finding a bit of time here and there for new activities. Blake decided to challenge himself to write some new songs and release an album–and that challenge became “The Homebound Tapes”, a somewhat solo six-song EP. More introspective than his usual work, it was written in these times, of these times, with the hope of getting us through these times. A really good, enjoyable listen. On this show, we hear some of it, and have a warm, friendly talk about, well, everything! More information can be found at Big Stir Records: https://www.bigstirrecords.com/blake-jones-the-trike-shop
