Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #196 3/6/2021: Dolph Chaney interview!

I’d really been looking forward to this show–the day where our own (yes, we get to claim him) Dolph Chaney returns to our airwaves. Well, it’s not like he’s been gone at all. Several of us Woody Radio DJs play his music regularly, and he does do those regular Woody Radio Live shows for us on our Facebook page. Check them out–they’re pretty fantastic.

But on this episode, I get to hang out with Dolph for about an hour. He was on my show last April, around the beginning of the pandemic and its resultant quarantining. And with any luck, he’ll be bookending the pandemic with this visit. The occasion–the release of his wonderful new album, “This Is Dolph Chaney”.

The album is so named because it’s a reintroduction to the world, of sorts. I didn’t know this until last Saturday, but the songs on “This Is” were all written and recorded years earlier. Dolph and his co-conspirator, Nick Bertling, decided that they deserved a modern treatment. Here’s the really cool part: on at least a couple of the songs, Nick came up with arrangements that Dolph just didn’t see coming, but absolutely delighted him. And me. And a whole bunch of other fans.

A couple of my standout tracks–“Meaningless”, which builds in intensity from acoustic guitars and strings, to soaring vocals and wailing, mid-tempo electric guitars. Possibly the emotional centerpiece of the album, and it ends what would be the first side of a vinyl album. One of those songs that resonates in your head and heart long after the sound fades away. And “Worship Song” pulls off a trick that only Dolph could manage–makes you laugh and cry at the same time. It’s completely touching, and pushes the same compassionate button that “Broken” did on his previous album, “Rebuilding Permit”. Dolph is a master lyricist, with the additional talent of knowing how to properly deliver those lyrics.

Artwork by the wonderful Lindsay Murray (previously interviewed on my shows for her own music), and amazing cover headshot by Kerry Hill rounds out this package. This is Dolph’s second offering on Big Stir Records, and you can pick it up here: https://bigstirrecords.com/dolph-chaney, or visit Dolph’s own website: https://dolphchaney.com/
