Woody Radio DJ Mike Show #212 5/1/2021: Interviews with Tim Foljahn and Bill Lloyd!

On this show, I had the pleasure of chatting with a couple of really accomplished musicians, Tim Foljahn and the legendary Bill Lloyd. Some fun was had.

Tim Foljahn has had an illustrious career as a session and live guitarist, working with the likes of Cat Power, Thurston Moore, and Townes Van Zandt. He collaborated with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley in Two Dollar Guitar. And he even played in the band on the TV show Orange Is The New Black.

So it’s been a while since Tim’s released a solo record, but the new one, “I Dreamed A Dream”, has been worth the wait. Great songwriting, vocals, and playing with some of his favorite longtime collaborators are all hallmarks of the album. My standout track is the steadily driving “Remember Me”. Imagine an unlikely pairing of Leonard Cohen fronting Kraftwerk, and you’re off to the races. And Tim absolutely makes it compelling, and enjoyable. Just like the rest of the album. Next up, the dean of the Nashville rock and roll scene, Bill Lloyd. Yes, of course you know him for his work in the popular country duo Foster & Lloyd. But he’s also been making rock and roll for pretty much his entire career. And with his latest release, “A Selection of Power Pop 1985-2020: 15 Songs”, he not only accomplishes truth in advertising, but creates a nice retrospective of a storied career. It’s pretty much sequenced chronologically, so when you start listening to the album, you magically go back to 1985, and listen to a great songwriter getting better and better at his craft as he progresses. The thing is with Bill, he makes these songs sound so easy to do, but only a master songwriter can pull this off.

In the interview, we also talk about his fun live band, The Long Players. They get together roughly monthly, and cover a classic album, live. If I ever get back to Nashville, I’ll make sure to time it so I can see these guys doing what they do best.

Oh–one more thing. I’ve known Bill for just a few years, and he’s been super prolific in that time. He’s been putting out an album or EP at the rate of at least one per year. As a music fan, all I can say is: Thank you! Check out his website: https://www.billlloydmusic.net/
